			Interpretation of ἐκλεκτῇ “The Elect”

			Lincoln Blumell wrote a book called ''Lady Eclecte: The Lost Woman of the New Testament'', which claims ἐκλεκτῇ is not an adjective, chosen, but the name of a woman, who ran a church in her house.

			He appeals to Clement of Alexandria who said:
			:The Second Epistle of John, which is written to virgins, is very straightforward. In fact, it was written to a certain Babylonian woman, by name Eclecte, but signifies the election of the holy church.

			Blumell claims that Clement read Εκλεκτὴ in 2 John 1 as a woman's name (which was perhaps given to her to signify that her church was elect). He and others point out that Clement likely read 1 Peter 5:13 to mean that Eclecte was a Babylonian.

			Blumell claims that 2 John 1 may have originally had the article τη between Εκλεκτη and κυρια but it may have been removed due to homoeteluton. He finds τη in minuscules 1243, 451, 330, 2492, and 69.

			On p. 12, the Blumell speaks about manuscripts that contain the reading “Ἐκλεκτῇ τῇ κυρίᾳ” and argues that κυρίᾳ could function either as an adjective or as a noun. He then proposes that it might be a substantivized adjective—a claim that, according to him, would necessitate the presence of the article. Yet a substantivized adjective is simply an adjective functioning as a noun, which renders the distinction irrelevant in this case, since κυρίᾳ can operate as a straightforward noun as he already conceeded. Consequently, the entire line of argumentation appears conceptually muddled. In 1996, Dan Wallace Wallace said that κύριος, along with several other adjectives, does not require the article to function substantivally and notes in a related footnote that κύριος always functions as a noun in the New Testament (p. 294).

			Whether John wrote Ἐκλεκτῇ τῇ κυρίᾳ or Ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ does not change anything. Nevertheless, given NT usage, if κυρία were being used to denote a position—functioning, for instance, as a synonym for an overseer or other position of authority—there is arguably a greater likelihood that the author would have used the anarthrous construction Ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ.

			When Blumell contends that comparable letters would have written Ἐκλεκτῇ τῇ κυρίᾳ, this is unsurprising, for that construction is the conventional manner in which titles are typically expressed.

			Titles are simple apposition and in these cases the proper noun is generally anarthrous and the appositional substantive is generally articular. However, that is not always the case. Titles can be formed in multiple ways.
			If I was writing the title “Paul the apostle,” I would write it as παῦλος ὁ ἀπόστολος. Similarly, if I was going to write a letter to “Paul the apostle” I would write this as “παύλῳ τῷ ἀποστόλῳ.”

			However, in the letters written by Paul he never uses an article in his title. For instance, Παῦλος ἀπόστολος “Paul the apostle” (Gal 1:1) or Παῦλος διάκονος “Paul the deacon” (Col 1:23). Cf. Rom 1:1; 1 Cor 1:1; 2 Cor 1:1; Eph 1:1; Php 1:1; Col 1:1; 1 Tim 1:1; 2 Tim 1:1; Tit 1:1; Phm 1:1.

			Other NT writers likewise employ titles analogous to Paul’s. For instance: Ἰάκωβος Θεοῦ καὶ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος (Jas 1:1); Πέτρος ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1 Pet 1:1); Συμεὼν Πέτρος δοῦλος καὶ ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (2 Pet 1:1); and Ἰούδας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος (Jude 1).

			With the title Judas Iscariot we see it both ways Ἰούδας ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης (Mt 10:4; Jn 12:4), Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριὼθ (Mk 14:10), and Ἰούδαν Ἰσκαριὼθ (Mk 3:19; Lk 6:16).

			The fact that the same word is mentioned in “elect sister” is at the end of 2 John completely writes off Blumell's claims.
