He was the first editor of the journal, [[New Testament Studies]].<sup>[]</sup><br />

After earning an M.A. and B.D. in Old Testament at the [[University of Glasgow]], Black then studied at the [[University of Bonn]] and returned to the University of Glasgow for his D. Litt.<sup>[]</sup> Black joined the team of [[Kurt Aland]], [[Bruce Metzger]], and [[Allen Wikgren]] to work on the [[UBS]] [[Greek New Testament]].<sup>[]</sup><br />

He is also noted, in his ''An Aramaic Approach to the Gospels and Acts'', for being one of the few mainstream scholars to advocate an Aramaic ''ur-text'' behind some of the Gospels.<br />
