At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Lutherans used the Biestkens Bible, published in 1560 . In addition, many immigrants read a German-language Luther Bible. The need to maintain their own identity with regard to the Reformed, whose States translation deviated too much from the Lutheran Bible, led the Lutherans to make a translation of the Luther Bible into Dutch. Moreover, the German-speaking members of the church were wished to provide a good Dutch translation, so that the use of the German Bible would disappear.

At the Synod of 1644, a committee was formed, chaired by the Amsterdam minister A. Visscher, who was commissioned to revise the existing Biestkens Bible on the basis of a good edition of the German Luther Bible. This Bible was published in 1648. Although the title page gave the impression that they were dealing with a completely new translation, this was not the case. This was probably formulated in this way because it was important for the Lutherans to have a new translation. This contributed to self-awareness. Nevertheless, Visscher was soon regarded as a translator and this was also mentioned on the title pages from 1734.
