Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves;
When the morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.
and He was transfigured before them, so His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them there, talking with Him.
Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, felt sorrowful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
Then Peter responded and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you want to, let us make three tabernacles here; one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
saying, "I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to that."
While he still spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
And the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful for us to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood."
But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.”
And they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.
Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen again from the dead.”
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who was valued, whom those of the children of Israel valued,
Then  His  disciples  asked   Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me."
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly Elijah is coming first, and will restore all things.
And Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "You say so."
But I say to you, that Elijah has come already and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they desired. Likewise the Son of Man will suffer by them also.”
And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.
Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"
And when they came to the crowd, a certain man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
And He did not answer him a word, to such an extent that the governor marveled greatly.
“Lord, have mercy on my son, because, he is crazy, and suffers greatly; because he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
Now at that feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the people a prisoner whom they wanted.
And I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”
And they had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.
Then Jesus responded and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”
Therefore when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas or Jesus, who is called Christ?"
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and he came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
For he knew that they had delivered Him because of envy.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast him out?”
When he was sitting down on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things in a dream this day because of Him."
And Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; because, truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
However this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
The governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas."
Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men,
Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?" They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified."
and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised again.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful.
And the governor said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"
And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received tax money came to Peter, and said, “Does your Teacher not pay tax?”
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but rather that a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it."
He said, “Yes.” And when he had come into the house, Jesus came before him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their own children, or from strangers?”
Then all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children."
Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Then the children are free.
Then he released Barabbas to them. And when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
Nevertheless, lest we should offend them, go to the sea, and cast in a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that, and give it to them for Me and you.”
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall and gathered the whole band of soldiers to Him.
And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
And when they had woven a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed their knees before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
And they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
And after they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, and put His own clothing on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled him to bear His cross.
And when they had come to a place called Golgotha (that is to say, a place of a skull),
they gave Him vinegar mixed with gall to drink. And when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
And they crucified Him and divided His garments, casting lots, that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots."
And sitting down, they watched Him there.
And set up over His head His written accusation: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then two thieves were crucified there with Him, one on the right hand and another on the left.
And those who passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads
and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself. If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking Him with the scribes and elders, said,
"He saved others; He cannot save Himself. If He is the King of Israel, let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe Him.
He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him. For He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
The thieves who were crucified with Him also mocked Him in the same way.
Now from the sixth hour to the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"—that is to say, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This man is calling for Elijah."
And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink.
The rest said, "Leave Him alone. Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him."
Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the spirit.
And, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. And the earth quaked, and the rocks split,
and the graves were opened. And many bodies of the saints who slept arose,
and came out of the graves after His resurrection, and went into the holy city and appeared to many.
Now when the centurion and those who were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God."
And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there watching afar off,
among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's children.
When the evening had come, there came a rich man of Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus' disciple.
He went to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre and departed.
And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting across from the sepulchre.
Now the next day, which followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,
saying, "Sir, we remember, while He was yet alive, that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.'
Therefore command that the sepulchre be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead.' So the last error shall be worse than the first."
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go your way. Make it as secure as you can."
So they went and made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone, and setting a guard.
