1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the news of Jesus
1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these sayings, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.
2 and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works show forth themselves in him."
2 And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.
3 For Herod had taken hold of John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias's sake, his brother Philip's wife.
3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"
4 For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
4 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female'
5 And while he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude because they counted him as a prophet.
5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave father and mother and shall cling to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh'?
6 But when Herod's birthday arrived, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.
6 Therefore they are no more two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate."
7 Because of this he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask.
7 They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?"
8 And being before instructed by her mother, she said, "Give me here John the Baptist's head on a platter."
8 He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And the king was sorry. Nevertheless, for the oath's sake and those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given to her.
9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another commits adultery. And whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery."
10 And he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
10 His disciples said to Him, "If the case of the man with his wife is so, it is good not to marry."
11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the young woman, and she brought it to her mother.
11 But He said to them, "All men cannot receive this saying, except those to whom it is given.
12 And his disciples came, and took up the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
12 For there are some eunuchs who were so born from their mother's womb, and there are some eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it."
13 When Jesus heard of it, He departed from there by ship to a deserted place by Himself. And when the people had heard of it, they followed Him on foot out of the cities.
13 Then there were little children brought to Him, that He should put His hands on them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them.
14 And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, and He healed their sick.
14 But Jesus said, "Allow little children to come to Me, and do not forbid them. For of such is the kingdom of heaven."
15 And when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, "This is a deserted place, and the time is now late. Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food."
15 And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.
16 But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to depart. You give them something to eat."
16 And behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Master, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?"
17 And they said to Him, "We have here but five loaves and two fish."
17 And He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? There is no one good but One—that is, God. But if you will enter into life, keep the commandments."
18 He said, "Bring them here to Me."
18 He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness.
19 And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
19 Honor your father and your mother. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself."
20 And they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.
20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?"
21 And those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you have and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come and follow Me."
22 And immediately Jesus compelled His disciples to get into a ship and to go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up by Himself on a mountain to pray. And when the evening came, He was there alone.
23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you that a rich man shall enter into the kingdom of heaven with difficulty.
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves, for the wind was contrary.
24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
25 When His disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, "Who then can be saved?"
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a spirit." And they cried out in fear.
26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer. It is I; do not be afraid."
27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, "Behold, we have abandoned all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?"
28 And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, bid me to come to You on the water."
28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me shall also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
29 And everyone who has abandoned houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for My name's sake shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
30 But when he saw the wind was boisterous, he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried, saying, "Lord, save me!"
30 But many who are first shall be last, and the last shall be first."
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 And when they came into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the ship came and worshipped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God."
34 And when they had gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of Him, they sent out into all that surrounding country and brought to Him all who were diseased,
36 and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly whole.
