Cyrillic digraphs

De (Д, д; italics: Д, д) is a letter of the Cyrillic alphabet.

It commonly represents the voiced dental plosive /d/, similar to the English pronunciation of the Latin letter D.

In Russian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, and Macedonian it is romanized using the Latin letter D.

History

The Cyrillic letter De was derived from the Greek letter Delta (Δ, δ). The major graphic difference from its Greek equivalent lies in the two "feet" below the lower corners of Cyrillic letter De.

In the Early Cyrillic alphabet its name was Template:Script (dobro), meaning "good".

In the Cyrillic numeral system, De had a value of 4.

Form

The Cyrillic letter De, like the Cyrillic letter El, has two typographical variants: one where its top is square, and one where it is pointed (like Delta).

handwritten forms

The handwritten form of capital letter De looks like Latin D as the printed version is not comfortable enough to be written quickly. The handwritten lowercase letter looks a bit like a lowercase Latin ‹g› and it is joined to a following letter by its tail [1]. In italic type, the lowercase form looks more like the lowercase Latin ‹d›: ‹д›.

Usage

The letter De represents the voiced dental plosive /d/, except word-finally and before voiceless consonants it represents a voiceless [t] and before a palatalizing vowel it represents /dʲ/.

Encoding

The following table lists the different methods for encoding the character electronically, in both its majuscule (capital) and minuscule (small) forms.
